How ATS resume scanning works
What is an ATS scan?
An ATS scan is what an applicant tracking system does to your resume before any person reads it: it strips your PDF down to plain text, then sorts that text into fields like name, email, job titles, and dates. Your layout, columns, icons, and skill bars are not part of that text. This tool runs the same extraction on your file so you can read exactly what the system reads.
How does an ATS read my resume?
It pulls the text layer out of your PDF in the order the file stores it, not the order your eye follows. Two columns get merged line by line, anything saved as an image comes through blank, some fonts drop letter pairs like "ti" and "fi", and standard headers such as Experience, Education, and Skills are how the parser decides what each block of text means. Content it cannot place often gets dropped.
Do ATS systems reject resumes automatically?
Most do not reject anything on their own — they decide what recruiters see. Recruiters search and filter the parsed text, so a resume with a missing email or scrambled job titles never surfaces in the searches that matter. The result looks the same as being screened out, which is why parsing problems are worth fixing before anything else.
What does this ATS scan check?
Twelve parsing checks, split between content a hiring system loses and content it scrambles: image-based PDFs, missing contact email, missing LinkedIn or GitHub links, skill-bar graphics, missing location, missing standard sections, multi-column layouts, garbled text from font ligatures, nonstandard dates like "Spring 2022", symbols in section headers, contact details buried below a summary, and excessive page count.
Is this ATS resume checker free?

What happens to my resume file?
